Games!

Scouts,

In an effort to increase the participation of the Patrols in the day-to-day running of the troop, we will start having the Patrols assume responsibility for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the games.

The Patrol Leader will assume final responsibility, but that does not mean that any patrol member can't make a suggestion.

Please keep in mind that the games should reflect the values of Scouting including fairness and physical safety. Some of the games listed in the older Scouting materials are no longer acceptable. If it sounds like there's a possibility that somebody is likely to get hurt, you better ask first! You are WAY to young to be involved in a lawsuit!

For starters, we're going to ban the game "500." There are hundreds of other games. Use your resources and find something new!

Fantasy Football

The Patrol Leaders Council spoke, and we have listened!

Last year, the Patrol Leaders Council expressed an interest in running a troop Fantasy Football league. Hey, it's YOUR program!!! So I'm pleased to announce that the Troop 55 Fantasy Football league has been set up and is ready for registration.

To participate, you MUST have an email address and you will be required to sign up for a Yahoo account. Parents, it's up to you to decide if this is appropriate. I will require parental permission to include any minors (scouts, friends or sibblings).

If you are interested in participating, send me an email from the account you want to use and I will send the invitation.

Summer Camp 2011

Believe it or not, but we already have dates for Summer Camp for next year!

In 2010, we tried a new camp. For 2011, we will be returning to Camp Cornhusker. The camp has undergone a LOT of changes since we were last there. The undergrowth around the campsites has been cleared out. It looks just like a city park!

We have registered early in order to lock in 2010 prices. The price will still be determined by our "Gold Star Unit" status, but will be either $170 or $185.

The dates for camp will be June 19th, 2011 through June 25th, 2011. The online calendar has been updated, so please update your calendars!

Summer Service Project

Once again, Troop 55 has volunteered to tend the flag display at the Community Blood Bank. We will be setting the flags in place in the morning and retiring the flags in the evening.

The days are:

  • Memorial Day - May 31st
    8:00 AM & 8:30 PM
  • Independence Day - July 4th
  • Labor Day - September 6th
The exact times will be determined later. Each time you participate, it will count as 1/2 hour of community service.

New Handbook . . . New Requirements

The BSA has released the 12th Edition of the Boy Scout Handook. This book is available at the Scout Store or online.

It is not necessary that you have the 12th Edition Handbook, but be aware that the many of the rank requirements have changed. The new rank requirments can be used currently and on January 1, 2010, they will become the standard.

Youth who are currently working on rank requirements may finish that rank under the 11th Edition reqirements. Once a rank is earned in 2010, you MUST use the new requirements in the 12th Edition Handbook for subsequent rank advances.

The new requirements can be previewed at http://www.usscouts.org/advance/changes/advchanges10.asp

Early Rank Requirements

The BSA National Council has produced a series of videos covering all early rank requirements (Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class).

Youth members are STRONGLY encouraged to watch the appropriate videos for the reqirements they are working on.
